Description

So just a little something to show you guys that I\'m not TOTALLY dead (more or less, an unannounced hiatus while in school). This was one of my projects I did for Animation II, which was a walk cycle. I know it\'s not 100% perfect, but I still enjoy quite a lot :D I might make a traditional one here soon rather than in Flash (I\'m not enjoying Flash at all now, though that could be because I\'ve been having to use it for every single project now alsdkfjf)

This little guy, probably you guys can tell, is inspired off my own hedgie, Jimmie! I really like this style to work with though, so you guys will probably see it more in the future once the con is over and school is too.

Enjoy! If the animation doesn\'t work here, just check it under Download and it should work.

All of this was done in Adobe Flash CS5

Just under this category, I had to submit it at a GIF (which killed the quality big time)

As this is a walk cycle, it's tough to rate based on originality and such, so I kind of just went on gut feeling for that. XD But otherwise, I hope this critique helps you for future animations!

First off, I see that you're getting some squash in when your hedgehog's foot plants on the ground. That's great thinking! It makes him feel like he's happily sauntering along. As you mentioned in your description of the piece however, this cycle is not perfect and I can tell you that the simplest reason is because of structure.

I like that you have tried to rotate his pelvis a little (his tail comes towards us and then away), but you need to follow through with the rest of his lower body in order for that effect to work, otherwise it looks like an error. Conversely, it would be interesting if his chest also rotated opposite to his pelvis; i.e. if the right leg is forward, the right shoulder is back, and so on. It's kind of hard to explain or imagine, so the easiest way for you to get what I mean is if you get up and twist your body so it makes sense! You might feel silly doing it though, hehe!

Also, watch out for the swing of his right arm, particularly his shoulder. This is a structure thing. You have his shoulder starting out where a shoulder would be, but then as the arm moves back, the shoulder moves up into his jaw (if you wanted to do the aforementioned twist, it would move back, not upwards, and more of the left arm and chest would be seen when the right arm is back, and more of the back/spikes would be seen when the right arm is forward). Again, the twist is kind of complicated so for the sake of this, it would probably be easier on you to keep it simple and just anchor the shoulder in one place - after all, depending on how you walk, generally it's only your arm that is swinging like a pendulum.

Finally, watch his right foot - you have the left foot drawn a little more nicely with the foot actually bending, whereas the right foot is kind of just sliding and not changing its shape as much. Keep it consistent!

Anything else at this point is just nit-picky, so I will leave you with those tips. I hope you enjoyed animating this, because it certainly looks like you have! The hedgehog is very cute and I'd love to see him in an actual setting. I hope that this helps you!
